It took me a while to get comfortable talking about money. Not because I didn\u2019t know my value, but because I wanted clients to <em>feel<\/em> the value too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I wanted to share how I approach pricing, what factors go into my estimates, and why I believe transparency is key, not just for my clients, but for <em>my own sanity<\/em> as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-don-t-charge-for-time-i-charge-for-value\"><strong>I Don\u2019t Charge for \u201cTime\u201d I Charge for Value<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I stopped selling hours a long time ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because clients don\u2019t really care how many hours something takes\u2014they care about the result. Whether it\u2019s a landing page that converts better, a cleaner UX that improves engagement, or a new brand identity that finally <em>feels right<\/em>\u2014they\u2019re buying the <strong>outcome<\/strong>, not the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I price based on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>scope<\/strong> of the project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>impact<\/strong> it will have on the client\u2019s business<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>complexity<\/strong> of the work involved<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And, yes, my <strong>experience and expertise<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This allows me to focus on doing great work without watching the clock\u2014and gives clients a clear, upfront cost with no surprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-every-project-gets-a-custom-quote-but-i-have-a-base-range\"><strong>Every Project Gets a Custom Quote (But I Have a Base Range)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t believe in one-size-fits all pricing, but I also don&#8217;t like being mysterious. So over time, I developed <strong>base price ranges<\/strong> for different types of projects, I build quotes based on a mix of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scope of work<\/strong> (pages, features, integrations, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Client goals<\/strong> (and how design contributes to them)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Timeline<\/strong> and urgency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level of involvement<\/strong> on my end (strategy, content, dev)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I do have base price ranges for things like landing pages, full websites, or UI\/UX design. But every proposal is tailored to the real needs of the project. If there are optional add-ons, I make that clear and break down the pricing, so the client can decide. Check out my <a href=\"https:\/\/elamaoui.com\/en\/freebies\/\">template for project proposals<\/a> that I&#8217;ve been using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-break-my-prices-into-milestones\"><strong>I Break My Prices Into Milestones<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is something clients have really appreciated: I almost always split the total cost into <strong>phased payments<\/strong>, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>50% to kick off the project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25% after the first big milestone (like final design approval)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25% upon delivery or launch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps with cash flow on both sides, and it creates a shared rhythm that keeps everyone aligned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also builds trust. Clients can see the progress, give feedback, and feel confident knowing they\u2019re paying as the work gets done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-m-transparent-about-what-s-included-and-what-s-not\"><strong>I\u2019m Transparent About What\u2019s Included (and What\u2019s Not)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If there\u2019s one lesson I\u2019ve learned the hard way, it\u2019s this: <strong>clarity upfront saves relationships later.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I always include a detailed scope in my proposals that outlines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s included (deliverables, rounds of revision, tech stack)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s not included (like copywriting, stock photos, hosting, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What counts as \u201cextra\u201d work and how it would be billed if needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I want clients to feel informed and not blindsided. The more transparent I am at the start, the smoother the collaboration goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-m-not-the-cheapest-and-that-s-intentional\"><strong><strong>I\u2019m Not the Cheapest\u2014And That\u2019s Intentional<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of cheaper options out there, and I\u2019m totally okay with that. I\u2019m not trying to compete on price, I\u2019m here to deliver <strong>value<\/strong>, backed by experience, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clients who choose to work with me aren\u2019t just paying for \u201ca website\u201d or \u201ca design\u201d, they\u2019re investing in someone who will guide them, ask the right questions, and care as much as they do about the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that makes a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transparency-builds-trust\">Transparency Builds Trust<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pricing can feel awkward to talk about, but I\u2019ve found that <strong>being honest and clear upfront<\/strong> saves a ton of stress down the road. It also sets the tone for the kind of working relationship I want to have: open, respectful, and rooted in mutual trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re a client reading this: ask questions. If something isn\u2019t clear, bring it up. I\u2019d much rather have a conversation early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\u2019re a designer trying to figure out your own pricing: don\u2019t be afraid to charge for the value you bring.
